According to the bible, when God created man, he also created food for man to eat. He created carbohydrates.
So God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him; male and female He created them.
And God blessed them and said to them, Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it [using all its vast resources in the service of God and man]; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and over every living creature that moves upon the earth.
And God said, See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the land and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food.
If God created carbs for food, how can carbs be bad for us?
I’m going to explain a bit about carbohydrates, but I won’t go into too much detail. Carbohydrates are energy giving foods. Carbohydrates fuel the body and brain. Carbohydrates break down into glucose when eaten and digested. Glucose is vital for our bodies, especially our brain. Glucose is stored in our muscles and liver as glycogen. It is used to fuel our physical activity, without it, we would run out of energy.
So, the earth was created, man was created, food was created. In those days, man had to work the soil and hunt. There was a requirement to be constantly moving. Women also worked in the fields in addition to taking care of the home. The lifestyle was not sedentary. The creator knew what he was doing. He created the body, he also created different types of food to keep the body working at an optimum level. Carbs for energy, protein for muscle repair and muscle building and fats (good fats, essential fatty acids) for joint health, fuel for cells, protective layer for organs etc.
However, once the body has used the glycogen (carbs) it needs as fuel, the rest gets stored in our body as excess non essential body fat (essential body fat is the small percentage of body fat our body needs for survival). This simply put means that you are eating too much, your portion sizes are too large – there is an imbalance, you are taking in more fuel than your body needs and your tank is overflowing.
One of the things I’m fond of saying is, “you have to always do the maths. If you ain’t burning it, then you should be watching it”.
What I mean by this is, every time you sit to eat a meal, look at your plate, what percentage of the plate is carbs, protein and fats? By carbs I mean natural carbs which should be made up of grains and vegetables. By fats I mean good fats, essential fats like that found in oily fish, nuts, seeds, oils ( olive oil etc).
Keep it balanced. How much energy are you expending? Are you eating more than you are expending?
A sustainable starting guideline if you are on a weight loss mission is:
50% Carbs (25% grains and 25% vegetables )
20% Good Fats
This is a suggested starting guideline. Tweak it as your body instructs you to, just bear in mind that a nutritious balanced meal is made up of all the above mentioned macronutrients.
I seriously believe that if certain foods were put on this planet by the creator for a certain purpose, we should not be eliminating it from our diet (unless there is an intolerance/allergy) . Learning how to eat those foods in the right portions takes a lot of practice. But if you are determined, you will keep practicing it and eventually master it. It will become something you do automatically without thinking about it. You will learn to stop when you have reached what should be your limit. You will learn that you don’t have to pile your plate high at a party just because the food is there to be had. You won’t need to resort to fad diets you can’t sustain for the rest of your life. You will stop becoming depressed and discouraged when you fall off your fad diet wagon and your weight goes up. Your weight will not go up and down because you will have learnt how to maintain a healthy weight by eating the right amount of food your body needs to perform at an optimal level. Excess weight will stop slowing you down. You will feel vibrant, more energetic, full of life and vitality.
You will be the best version of you!
The examples of the foods I have mentioned in this article are not extensive. They are just a few examples. You must always do your own research with regards food.
